Well as a commonwealth, they're not allowed to vote on matters like federal law, they can't vote for President, and they don't have representation in Congress, but they do pay taxes. However they pay lower taxes and basically govern themselves.

As a resident of the commonwealth of Virginia, I have a sneaking suspicion it is due to their status as an unincorporated territory ;)

Still the more I read about this the more I'm interested in the various dynamics that may or may not lead to statehood.

Whoops, I was under the impression they were a commonwealth and Virginia was a state... Weird.

All I know is that here I don't have to worry about Hurricanes... :)
