Speaking of helmets, I'm sure price isn't always an indicator of what's good...but, are there helmets (brands, really) that I should stay away from? Or as long as it's DOT approved first and foremost, as long as it fits right it's ok...? I mean, I should be able to get an excellent helmet for 3 or 4 yards right?

If it's new and DOT approved you can be assured of getting a good lid. I'd use somewhere around $100 as a good benchmark for your low price though I have seen the occasional DOT full-face on sale for around $85.

I don't always buy from the dealer. There's one dealership that if I find something there, I always buy- Jarmin's in charlottesville VA, and I'm there most every weekend. Amazing staff, great people. I've had my bikes in there for minor stuff and half the time they don't charge me, they just want to ride it around the block or for a half hour (covered by their insurance : ) ). They always get me what I want and they give honest advice (wouldn't sell me a warrior when I was first starting even though I had the money) Then there's a dealership closer to me Coleman Powersports in Falls Church Va

I can't say enough bad about them. Anyway- if Jarmin's doesn't have something or if I'm not in cville- I go try it on at Coleman's, then tell them it's amazing and I can't wait to get home and order it online.

I use Joe Rocket stuff. A meteor 4.0 jacket, ballistic 5.0 pants and some of their gloves. I used to run with a rescue squad and I liked the way JR held up.

I have some good gear, leather jacket, Nitro pants, a few other expensive items. BUT I also have some less expensive options. Good quality knee and elbow guards and body armour. Sometimes you just want to wear your jeans but still need the protection. Won't help with the road rash but will prevent broken bones. Look at the freestylers, no fear shirts and plastic underneath like Robocop.

Thanks... but I'll pass on the road rash I, for one, happen to really like my skin How 'bout some of them reinforced jeans, with armor underneath?

I've got a pair of those jeans. I don't know for sure that they'll save me skin, but the feel really sturdy. I wear them every time I go out. And if I'm going on a long trip, or it's a little cold out I'll put my chaps on top.

Cool, cool...Any opinions on Icon stuff? I like some of the leather jackets.

That sounds like a good solution, the jeans I was refering too are called Razor jeans and are made in SA with a teflon/kevlar mix on the knees and butt. Draggin jeans are probably the equivalent. It was 37 degrees C today. If I wore my leathers I would have cooked
