I believe it should always be an individual's choice as to how to manage their safety (unless in the case of children, of course). One of my favorite slogans -
keep your laws off my body! I will always wear a helmet as well as my seatbelt. And anyone else being transported (child
or adult) on my bike or in my car will also wear their helmet or seat belt (um, my ride = my way

)
Cheers,
Loonette

I think all twisty roads should have a toll booth where you show your rider's permit for access. You get this permit by taking a road test, and then you can do as you please if you get the permit. BTW, the test requires a high skill level to pass, so no bad drivers will be on the road with you.
Then the cars will have to take the four lane highways, where a similar permit can be issued for drivers with proven skills at high speeds. This would give motorcyclists and skilled drivers an escape from the dangers of bad drivers, who would then weed themselves out on the two lane state roads. In town would be the usual free-for-all until the end of time, when Christ returns. Happy Easter everybody.

Since this topic has degenerated slightly, this degenerate will chime in....
Helmets, seatbelts, smoking, drinking.... if you start to legislate against these things on the grounds that 'the public has to pay for healthcare when you wreck yourself by partaking in these activities', then you have to legislate against the root cause and biggest contributor.... Stupidity.
And how are you going to do that? Every person on earth can be excluded from 'healthcare only for the "responcible" people'. Who decides what lifestyle you must live to qualify for heathcare? Is there going to be an I.Q. test at the Emergency desk? How about a detailed lifestyle questionare? If you dumb enough to walk infront of a bus, should the rest of the country have to pay to keep your stupid azz alive???

The UK govt has decided in its wisdom to make the wearing of seatbelts and motorcycle helmets compulsory at all times (you can be booked for sitting on a stationary motorcycle without a helmet, here!)
Her Majestey's Government's noble reasoning was simple: It calculated not only the cost to the police of sorting the traffic out and investigating the accident, and to the National Health Service for scooping you off the road and putting you back together. It also calculated the loss to insurance companies and the loss in its tax investment: how much it cost the state to educate you to a level where modern business could effectively exploit you.
As all taxes are ultimately borne by business and not the individual, this is a purely commercial calculation.
No wonder the 'freedom to choose' campaigns lost.

Good one Buzz.lol... Since the Government deems it neccesary to protect us they really should require helmets in cages as well. I've never seen a race car driver without one.
