May be a silly question...but what IS the proper way for a passenger to mount the bike?

What signals should be discussed before taking the ride and what are the most common ones?

Passengers should wait until you're on the bike with both feet down and wait for your nod this is your indication that you're ready for them to get on. The should mount from the left side just like you do.

On a cruiser you want to stand beside it and throw one leg over, just like normal then sit down.

On a sportbike if the passenger is short they'll need to put their left foot up onto the peg and stand up on it while throwing their right leg over the bike. If you as the driver are not ready for it, well it can be startling to suddenly have the left side drop down.

Signals are typcially relegated to slaps to the back of the head while I'm riding. I don't know about anyone else.

I always have my two feet down before telling my GF to get on a bike. She will have her left foot on left peg, hold my sholder and throw her right foot over the seat and saddle bag. To get off is opposit direction but she will wait until I say so and I will always have my two feet down to secure the bike.

Signal that we use. Tab on my helmet to slow down or if she want to stop, tab on left/right shoulder following with finger point to turn to that direction. Thumb Up, she is okay, thumb down gotta stop immedeiatly. Helmet knock helmet mean she is in wrong position and I would have to tell her to look through my left shoulder or sometime mean she fall asleep and I have to wake her up J/K.

That would be a scary way to wake up. Bouncing your helmet off the person in front of you and realizing that you're doing 60mph with nothing to hold you in place.

I waited about a week before taking my sister for a ride.

As far as passengers mounting the bike, mine weighs enough that they don't necessarily have to wait for me to get on and stabilize it first if they don't want to. I then tell them to just relax in turns and don't try to remain perpendicular to the road, and to let me know if I'm going too fast for their comfort. I also give them a heads-up before we get going that the pegs may touch down and make a sudden scraping noise, so please don't bail on me!

The tank range was 400kms+ and I could ride for 3-4 hours non stop, but the Goose would fall asleep and here I am merryly doing 180 and swooping into corners.

I always help guide my passengers foot over the seat and rear fender. Its only women who have ever ridden on the back and they insist on wearing heels. I don't want my seat or leather scratched or scuffed.

Also because my pipes are still stock and they are above as well as below the passenger peg, I place their foot as far to the edge as I safely can. Sounds like I'm noblely protecting their boots when its really the chrome pipes I'm trying to keep clean

I think the Kieth Code comment was the best. Do nothing. Especially do nothing while traveling at very slow speeds. My GF did some squirming around and the ensuing conversation almost promoted her to status of former GF. Just tell her (it is a her isn't it?) she doesn't have to think too hard, just do what I (you ) do.
