gummient,

Don't you hate when that happens! Plugging along, enjoying the ride then "BAM!" wtf  . As you described, it happens just like that.

My strategy as I got older was do more country road touring. Less traffic, longer straight aways etc... hopefully to minimize the instances(traffic) where a situation could happen. That plan doesn't work.

Your story reminded of my first long ride in my sidecar this past November, which included a surprise 4x4 laying across the deserted long stretch of country road. My wife and grandson were in the sidecar at the time too. And then there is deer and other large animals, large road kill, drunk drivers cruising the back roads, bad roads that aren't marked properly that you may not see in the cities.

I guess it will always come down to ones skill and a degree of luck?

Thanks for sharing your story. You write well.

The long range weather forecast isn't looking very good and as I usually put the Harley into winter storage the weekend after Remembrance Day anyway, I booked this morning to drop off my beloved Road Glide at the dealer up in Owen Sound. This is always an emotional time for me, so the Official Consort & Snugglebunny To The Head Cheese has offered to lessen the pain by cooking me a bigass steak with all the trimmings for supper. She's an angel, my Angie is.

The Harley will be getting the full spa treatment over the winter, including a wash/wax and a 40k service. It will also get a Veteran graphic (similar to the one on the Ontario licence plate on my Jimmy) painted on the rear fender by Vince Goodeve, whose studio just happens to be in the same building as the Harley dealer. He does great work - if anyone is interested, here's the link to his website: http://www.goodevestudio.com/frame.htm.

Douk is now my primary ride and I'll be spending most of tomorrow working on him in the garage, getting ready for the upcoming winter season. A new Duro pusher tire is going on, with the 3/4 worn current pusher being transferred to the hack side, and I'll probably slap a new Uralshina on the front while I'm at it. A full service will be done next and maybe I'll even give him a wash. The front brake rotor is looking pretty worn, but Ken Beach at Old Vintage Cranks has set one aside for me and I'll put it on next time we go down to Hillsburgh to visit.

I'll miss the Harley, but the Ural - as usual - will keep me sane and riding through winter.

Xmas came early for me today! Because Angie wanted to make sure I got the proper kit, colour and accessories that I wanted, she took me to a music store this morning so I could order my new drum set! :kicking: On Xmas day I'll be rattling the walls with my new set of Pearl "Forum" series drums, finished in Smokey Chrome. It's been over 20 years since I last played (I was in a few bands in my youth) and I'm really looking forward to getting back into it.

Then, after a full day of furniture shopping, we went to dinner at a restaurant that was highly recommended to us by several people. Angie had the roast lamb leg and lamb sausage combo, while I had... get this... smoked duck poutine. It was awesome! Traditional Quebec-style poutine laced with slices of smoked duck, followed by a Grasshopper Sundae (vanilla ice cream and two chocolate wafer sticks smothered with a shot of Creme de Menthe) for dessert.

Life is good!

Haven't a clue... she hasn't finished drafting her wish list yet. But it will be hard to top last year's present, that's for sure.

Why would I buy Angie an ex cop bike? :? She loves her '06 Harley Softail Deluxe. And besides, our garage is really small - I can barely fit our three bikes inside as it is.
