I myself am playing catch up on riding gear.
For the longest time all I had was a helmet, but then I got a tank bag, and this kick-a$s Oakley backpack that latches onto a vest rather than using straps.
Previous to that the only backpack I had was this clunky hideous piece of junk I got for $7 at the thrift store.
Checkmate.

I hate to play devil's advocate here, but since when does "riding gear" = "safety gear"? A backpack or tank bag or whatever can be considered riding gear without being some sort of protective device, right? I think that's what he's getting at.

So shouldn't your safety be a priority ahead of another bike? I guess you'll protect what ya got.

Because that's called luggage?
Regardless, in the thread linked there were several posts about getting riding gear as relates to jackets, pants, gloves etc. When all of a sudden we get, "I wear a backpack! It's kickass, Oakley makes it!" Which is sort of like walking into a conversation about skiing and saying, I have rollerskates!
Can you seriously say that a backpack made by Oakley that clips on to a vest is riding gear in any shape or form? It sounds like luggage to me, and luggage that wasn't really designed with riding in mind, unless you're wearing a vest OVER your jacket.
