Got the prognosis in from the autorepair shop. It's going to cost us $1200 to have them fix the truck. They have to rebuild the whole rearend (so they say) and they want to get a used rearend from the junkyard. I could probably do the work for less than half of what it costs the mechanic to do the work. If my mom won't pay for it (she's always claiming it's her truck whenever she wants to do something like go "fudge" it up [the reason why it fell apart in the first place was her driving, I'm sure ] or take it to pick up something without asking then leave it in my work's parking lot with no gas) then I'm gonna just have it towed to my backyard where it can sit until I work on it. My dad is going to "give" me a Ford Escourt to drive around, but that'll be a couple of weeks from now.

Sounds about right. When those clips are gone you're axel is gone. I woulden't rebuild. Honestly, take their advise and go to a junk yard and pick up a used one and clean her all up. (I'll get you a good link for cleaning them the proper way) and see if you can't swap it you'rself. It's not terribly hard but if you have never dropped an exle before it may give you some trouble. Ether case, can't hurt to try it you'rself first, if you can't do it just tow it to them and have them do it. If you do it, get the axel for about $70 - $100. Don't may any more. Pull it you'rself from the yard. Most places will give you a quote of $400 for an axel but thats pulled and cleaned, ask them for a price if you do everything on you're own. Do it you'rself. The labor is nothing and the part is cheap.

Man, it's stuff like that that made me decide to become a mechanic.

+1 to the last post. You should be able to locate, clean, renew and swap axles in a weekend. And all for under $200 max.

That's what I'd like to do. I'm also gonna ask them (they closed at 6pm) how much it'd cost if we went and got and cleaned the axle then had them do all the work. It may be just as prudent to just do all the work ourselves.
