Besides, no one said they were mandatory, but they are "common sense" smart to wear. All it takes is a couple grains of sand to get in your eyes and you're out of commission for a couple of days with a scratched cornea.
Even the biggest no helmet squids still wear sunglasses partially to keep "crumb" out of their eyes and partially to look cool. So the question is, are teh squids smarter then you?
Not anymore. You catch one too many bugs in your eye, you wear your damn goggles and keep your visor down. That's kind of what this thread is about, remember?
around here in charleston sc, a lot of people ride their bikes at night, dont wear sunglasses or goggles, is there some sort of trick to not letting ur eyes water, or getting stuff nailed in them?

To the OP, glad to hear your eye is doing better. Its amazing how much damage a little thing can do.
For those thinking there's a only minutely small chance of getting foreign matter in your eye when riding, you're wrong. More than likely you haven't ridden enough. In the SMALL time I've been a PILLION rider, having the faceshield up with sunglasses on the few times for a minute after stopping, I've gotten junk in my eyes nearly every time. At road speed, faceshield up and glasses on it feels like you don't even have glasses on there's so much wind turbulence coming in behind the glasses. It happens way more often than you think.
Someone mentioned using Windex to clear the faceshield at stops. I don't think household cleaners are good for plastic faceshields. The ammonia (i think) eventually turns them yellow. Just be aware, not recommend way to clean your helmet visor.
A good way to get crusty bugs off is to lay a hot, wet soft towel over the visor to dissolve the bug guts, then you can easily rinse them off. Swiping dried bug guts across the shield leaves scratches.
DH and I considered getting tinted faceshields for our helmets. But we decided to let the bank account quit smoking and just wear sunglasses under clear shields for now. It has been easy to put the glasses on or off as needed. It seems a little more of a hassel changing out visors on the road compared to sunglasses.
