Start small. Speeds fun but my 550 cc vtwin can get me to 120 in a hurry. I will never get near that where I do most my riding. My most fun riding happens as 20-45 mph when I'm in the twisties.
Start at max with the 650r and the sv650. Try out the gs500 the ninja 500 and other bikes. They have enough power to out accelerate a porche, why would you need more?
Once you've refined your skills move to another bike. And no- you won't be getting there anytime soon. I guarantee it.
Sev- don't you have a few videos of racers saying they'd never ride a race replica bike on the street? Are those youtube? Can we get them in the beginners section as a sticky?
Indeed I did, however a short about 6 months ago managed to wipe out the HD I had them stored on, along with several thousand family photos, a lot of music, other movies and old homework assignments. Nothing like losing years of work to make you ana about backups.

And as for my opinion, I've got an 800cc V-twin cruiser. It weighs 550 lbs, has 50 horses, 50 ft/lbs of torque... I weigh about 300 and it still out accelerates most cars on the road... I'll do 0-60 in about 6 seconds. And I know what you mean, I'm a speed freak too... I've tested the top speed of every vehicle I've had the chance to. I'm sure I'd have dropped a sportbike by now if it was my first bike. Just my opinion! Oh, and mountain biking has NOTHING to do with biking... trust me! lol

wow guys... why are you recommending the Ninja 650 R to a beginner? I thought the whole idea here was to stay under the 600+CC sportbike as a beginner bike. IMO, 75HP is way too much. Insurance costs for a young, beginning biker with a 650cc/75HP is not going to be too cheap.
id say get one of these
kawasaki ninja 500
Suzuki GS500
Buell Blast 500
and
can you please give your post more 15 seconds for revision and fix all your ridiculous spellings and grammar?

Because the 650 ninja is still a relatively light weight and mild mannered bike, so it's one of those gray area bikes that gets recommended with a caution flag attached.

He's not really a beginner when he rides a 250, let alone a 250 on the dirt.

To expand, a 650r is very different than a cbr 600. The ninja is a parallel twin, the cbr an inline 4. There are other differences but think of the power difference between a 4 cylinder car and a 6 cylinder car. Very different beasts.

No one told me any of this I-4, V-rod, business when I was getting my bike, I would of definitely of gotten a GS500 or ninja 500..
If you have been riding for more than two years, why dont you know any of this? If I rode a scooter for two years I would know more than you.

the 650r and sv650 aren't really sportbikes... eh... it's a gray area.
Anyway- he has experience with DIRT bikes. It's an entirely different world. Tell me this dohun, hows the throttle work on a dirt bike? How do you start one? What's a monster size engine in the dirt? What's good gear to wear?
Don't know? Then shove off, leave enough alone and give the guy advice if you have it. If not keep it buttoned. No need to knock a man down for not knowing
