As a noob, i prefer it if the more experienced rider rides in front; it relieves me from having to think of navigation and lets me focus on stuff going on around me.
On twisties, I don't bother trying to keep up (since I can't anyway); the more experienced rider rides the curves at a pace he/she enjoys and I get to practise cornering lines and entry/exit speeds without being fixated on someone's taillight.
On straights, the more experienced rider usually hangs back a bit, which gives me the chance to close the gap.
Note; I guess this only works when your riding buddies are pretty laid back and don't really see the point in gunning it on a straight (or, at least, are willing to let you catch up on one).
