That is easily the most ignorant and hopefully unthought-out comment I've heard in a long time. I truly hope that this isn't the brightest thing you've said all day!
I don't know ANYONE who would more happily fall off their bike just because they're wearing gear. I know you didn't say that people would happily fall off their bikes, but by saying that when someone DOESN'T wear gear that they are somehow going to be better riders because their nerves and muscles will know that they're in danger is the same thing: the nerves and muscles DON'T know that gear is being worn, and so then relax!
Riding is a mixture of instinct and common sense combined with intelligence. Not wearing protective gear is a complete removal of one of these vital elements for survival.
- my two cents.

Was that three user names used in one thread. (It's too easy to change your user name here.) I also don't think much of deleting your post so you don't sound so...so...what is the word I'm looking for. Somebody help a brother out.

I'm encouraged by the standard of intelligence and insight of posts like this one that I am now quoting. Makes it really worth logging in some days.

ngsalvo, I think you missed the sarcasm in my wife's post. A quick look at her past posts will show that while we may occasionally vent on the natural frustrations of living in a foreign country, we love living in Japan, and have nothing but the highest respect for the people and culture.
Both of us thought that at best, that Avatar is a poorly thought out attempt at humor (perhaps trying to say that US bikes are superior to Japanese?) Shorts was giving the guy a chance to explain the message behind it. We interpreted it as a cheap shot, and in very poor taste. I work with the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force daily, and consider myself very fortunate to have the opportunity to do so.

In order to clear up your confusion, I found the avatar ridiculous because I understood it as Mr A.Sohl implying him as an American "defeated" me as a Japanese, by his wit and because of past military history. But what Mr. A.Sohl doesn't realize is I am not Japanese. In fact I am an American stationed out here with my American husband who is US Navy, which makes us one of those all-american military families. So, if ASohl is looking to 'beat' me with that avatar as a smart alek remark, he should be aware he blew his attempt. I know and am more than you think, so tread carefully.
Now what intelligence or lack there-of are you referring to? I'd like to straighten you out as well.

gear protects you not only from yourself, but also protects you from things that are out of your control.
In that situation, it don't matter what you are wearing. All gear or no gear, you are gonna be fcked up and likely dead. That's the risk we take.

I think there are enough smart people here to understand the conceit behind the OP statement. Obviously the person wearing gear is going to be in better shape than the person who is only wearing a helmet - however the leather wearer in the same accident that resulted in a fatality for the non leather wearer, is probably going to be dead as well.
