Well after lots of searching, I found a dealer that would sell me a Virago. I purchased one today and had it delivered this afternoon. I just got back from my first 2 rides since my MSF course. What a blast!!! I am looking forward to continuing to develop more confidence and better skills. Happy bike day to me!!!

Congrats on getting what you wanted. I was on vacation when this thread first started and I'm of the opinion that it was the (comminssion hungry) salesman, not the dealership that was the problem.

Imagine if the dealership wouldn't sell the 250 to anyone who wanted to buy it. Then they'd be stuck eating the entire cost of the bike. There'd be no reason for them to have the bike on the showroom floor if they didn't want to sell it.

I would call the manufacturer first and tell them that this particular dealer really gave you doubts about buying their product, tell them that if this is the way they operate then you do not want to buy from them.

Tell them you are only calling to let them know about this dealer and that you think something should be done to stop this nonsense, not only for ethical reasons but also for safety reasons!

You may be surprised but aside from them apologizing and going out of their way to please you and convince you to give them anothe rchance, they will most likely recomend another dealership and give you some kind of incentive to buy from them. It may be a couple hundred dollars off or maybe just a free helmet etc.

You will not only get the bike you want but will probably get something more for your troubles! Nobody deserves to be treated like that.

Honestly, for a grown man a 250 is very undersized. At the very least have a look at the V-star 650, it's still kinda small, but it might do what you need.

I don't agree that a 250 is undersized. It really depends on a person's comfort level in relation to experience, and they type of riding they are planning on doing. My father in law has a VStar 650 and it is a very nice bike, but at my current skill level and my around town riding, I would not want a bike the size and weight of the VStar. My 250 is perhaps underpowered for freeway trips, but is a very nice weight for around town riding and for my own comfort level. Just to give my own specs...I am 36, 6' 210lbs. My 250 moves me along just fine and I have no problems with acceleration.

But this is just my thoughts and opinions.

Here is an update. I took delivery on a Virago 250 last Thursday. I have been on a few rides, mostly around my neighborhood, but on Saturday morning (early) I took a ride from my house to the main gate at Edwards AFB (where I work) just to get a feel for it. The road is a 4 lane divided "highway" with a speed limit of 60 mph. I felt very comfortable getting to and maintaining that speed. My specs are 5'10" 240 lbs. The only trouble accelerating to this speed is my inexperience and being a little rough through the gears. I think that I made the right choice for now and feel very confident that my abilities will grow much better and faster with this "small" bike than what they would with a bigger bike.

I have a ninja 250, I'm 5'8 and 160 and the 250 feels great to me. I'm sure eventually I'll upgrade but I've already made a few mistakes where a heavier and more powerful bike probably wouldn't have been as forgiving.

Sounds great John. I know what you mean about being a little rough through the gears. I have had my bike for two weeks and am finally shifting pretty smoothly (most of the time). Accelerating from a stop is getting faster which will do nothing positive for my gas mileage! Enjoy your bike.
