Lane splitting is not legal here in Canada. If it were, they may be the rare occasion I would do it. For example...trying to get back into the Vancouver area from the Valley area is a exercise in slow speed driving/riding. It is so tempting to ride up the shoulder, but there is almost always a police car up there waiting.
So...we suck it up and spend over half an hour....and if there has been a collision...maybe over an hour...
My bike has never had a problem. Yes..it is hot...but I bet I suffer more than the bike.
Same with the border lineups. When I get to the flat part, I turn off the engine and push the bike...but when it's on the incline part, I need to keep the engine running. It can take an hour in that lineup and the bike has never had a problem.
