I knew it ... once you sit on the bikes all those comparative metrics don't mean a hill a beans :P

Were your friends implying that Motorcyclists are not known for their intellect? 'cause I can tell you they are amongst the most philosophical and intellectual of groups -- need I point you towards Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance? -- hehe J/k I couldn't resist, I can't believe everyone let you get away with that comment!
Well, any slight towards motorcyclists I think is unintentional on their part. They only see the things the press wants them to see - which is that motorcycles are inherently dangerous. I've run lots of numbers (supplied from the NHTSA - and while yes - motorcycling is moderately more dangerous than driving a car - you can mitigate your risks.

Of course that doesn't make you safe (or me), but what it does mean is that I could just as easily die in a car accident as I could on a motorcycle.

They think I'm stupid to take the risk of riding a motorcycle and basically - use the 'Aren't you too smart to do something as stupid as ride a motorcycle?'

Bleh.

They're jealous 'cause they don't have the stones to take the risk. Brace yourself - it's gonna get worse once you actually start riding.

I gotta ask though - if someone has great intellect, and subtlety and insightfulness of thought - what good is it, if not joined with strength of will to take action as the result of one's excellent thoughts? I'm not so smart myself, but I'm smart enough to realize that "safety first" isn't always my friend, and risk in some degree is good for me. I will die regardless. What good is it if I arrive at the moment of my death having never lived? Not everything that "makes sense" is therefore logical....
