5/30/09.

Well, I must say, things are progressing nicely. Hubby and I took the BRC-2 course a couple of weeks ago, and had a great time. One of the instructors told me that she’d like to see me think about becoming an instructor in the future. That was high praise. She’s been an instructor for about 10 years.

The Jerry Pallodino DVD, Ride Like A Pro, has been very helpful, and we haven’t even worked past the first few exercises. It was expensive for a DVD, $35, and I could not find it used or discounted, so we ante’d up, and it has been worth the money. Captain Crash’s youtube lessons have also been extremely useful—and they’re free! Learning to drag the rear brake for doing slow-mo maneuvers was an eye-opener. They did not teach that in either BRC or BRC-2, but it makes the U-turn box almost easy. (Almost!) I would have ace’d the test, but for my stop. Usually, quick stop is my strongest feature on the test, because I will quite happily skid that rear tire for as long as necessary, but it has come to my attention that I can stop faster if I properly apply both. I do use the front brake, but, obviously, not enough. So easing off the rear while progressively bearing down on the front is my new riding challenge. In the test, my stop was stretched out like a rubber band, because I was determined to not skid. Okay, so I didn’t skid, and I’ve got some work to do . . .

The ERC is coming up on June 13th, and I want to be as sharp as possible for it. Haven’t been to parking lot practice lately, though. Since I’ve screwed up my thumb/wrist tendon, it’ll be even longer. I’m using my left thumb on the space bar as I type. It has been a little sore for over a week, but I wasn’t able to identify what caused it as I do a variety of tasks, any of which could have been the culprit. I have a talent for acquiring small injuries that I don’t notice until later, and then have no clue as to what happened.

Turns out, it was the throttle & the throttle lock, of all things. I’ve been increasing the length of my highway rides, and on Friday, took a jaunt out to Indianapolis, which was 375 miles roundtrip. By evening, it was painfully obvious what was causing the tendonitis. The Vista Universal Throttle lock is activated and deactivated by my right thumb. Maybe I should have gone with the Kaoko, after all. We went riding Saturday, me armed with naproxen and swearing off using the lock, and all seemed well until near the end. Yeeeoooww! As soon as I got home I wrapped my hand & wrist and applied an ice pack. The disappointing fact is that we only went 40 miles total, and it was split up into several long stops. So, gorgeous weather aside, I will not be riding for the next few days.

But I shall not end this on a sour note. Good news: I have scraped pegs on both sides of the Versys!! Parking lot only, but since then I have been leaning harder and enjoying my turns even more. Now the disclaimer: this is on a lowered suspension, lowered link, and lowered foot pegs. Okay, okay, but still . . . :ohyaoh:

Now, Indy has more picturesque parts to it, but this is where I took the time to actually stop and snap a pic. The sky tells it all: an utterly gorgeous day.

Thanks! 2 days rest have done a lot for it already. I re-positioned the throttle lock, too, so we'll see. Guess I'm glad I didn't hit Indy on Saturday--damaging thunderstorms.

You missed Victory Demo rides in Indy on Friday and Saturday. It was pretty cool.

Remember I.C.E. Ice, Compression, Elevation. I would recommend getting a throttle rocker to suppliment the Vista Cruise. If you ever decide to go with a product other than the Vista Cruise, checkout this site. I have the Brake Away system on my Valkyrie... I love it...

Yeah, I looked at a version of this at the place where I bought the Vista--it might even be the same vendor, I don't recall. They didn't have it for a Versys. I think I can make this work somehow. I want my next purchase to be a Stebel horn, and whatever li'l electrical do-jiggers needed to add it to my bike.

I've been behaving with the thumb, but I add Ibuprofen along with Ice, so it's more like: I.I.C.E. Put "Rest" in front, and it's RIICE. :)

I've got a Throttle Rocker that I use on longer trips. It lets you use the heel of your right hand to hold the throttle steady rather than your whole hand.

Glad you're getting out there! Hope your hand feels better soon.

Thanks! Maybe I should pull my Throttle Rocker out of retirement. I figured there would be too much stuff on the handlebar, almost no room for my hand. I may give it another try, though.

I just read notes from the Iron Butt Association, and got all inspired, so hopefully next week I'll ride a 450-mile loop over to Morgantown, WV.

Well, well, well. July, is it? Time flies when I'm having fun. I have been having fun--until finally guilt overtook me. For the last 2-3 weeks I cut way back on riding, (& thinking about riding) and turned my attention to the neglected garden, some laundary, and a few other tasks. Not as many as I should have done, though.

Oh, and I have been spending money. Doing my part to help out the motorcycle industry during a recession. I got this nifty tank bag that locks onto the gas tank ring. That's the only part that touches the bike--no scratches or rub marks!
Image

The flat thing on top is a map holder, and it is 10"x10", with another see-through pouch inside of it, to hold your cell or ipod or whatever:
Image

I can also remove the map holder, and zip the bag to its smallest size:
Image

It ruffles a bit in the breeze when the bike's moving, but it is really quite solidly attached. Took me a little while to get used to it, but I really like it.

I also got a Stebel horn, and installed that. Very pleased with myself, doing 'lectrical and all. Of course, ordering the wiring harness made installation pretty straightforward. Nevertheless, it was nervewracking for me to take the cowlings off. Afterward, though, it felt empowering. I got to use the horn on a texting chick who was holding up traffic during rush-hour merges. She whipped her head around like an elephant was bearing down on her.

I've had the grip puppies on for some time, and I rearranged the throttle lock, so my thumb is much happier now. Just today, riding pants arrived that fit! Whoo hooo!!! (Losing 9 pounds helped. :D ) Even though the pants are Tourmaster, they zip to my Fieldsheer riding jackets--bonus! They are the Flex-mesh pants. They have a thermal liner, a water/windproof liner, and a textile shell. Sections of the textile shell zip off, turning them into mesh pants--there's a whole lot of zippers involved.

Instead of doing dishes and folding the laundary--heck, they've waited this long--I had to try out my new pants. It was 87 degrees out, but breezy and not terribly humid. I kinda thought they would be cooler than in fact they were. They weren't any cooler than my jeans, maybe warmer, in fact. Too bad they only come in black. Iron Pony has a pair of Fieldsheer 4-Season pants that also fit now (9 pounds!! :D ) and they are light gray/silver. Hmmm . . . well . . . hmmm. Do I need 2 pairs for a 10-day trip? I'm going to put this question to the ladies lounge. Of course, my jeans also have CE armour in the knees, so I don't really need more. I'll have to work on this dilemma. I've also ordered the Alaska Leather sheepskin butt pad. Probably no chance it'll come tomorrow, though. I'd like to ride up to Mom & Dad's on Monday and return on Tuesday, to get some back-to-back mileage in. I'm going to wait until I have my butt pad, though. No point in suffering unnecessarily!
