I think this is why Ducati started off with the underseat exhausts. First of all, it's more aerodynamic than having a can sticking out the side, and secondly, you are helping to fill up that vacuum behind the bike with Hot, Expanded air (exhaust gasses.)

But of course, then you run into the weight of the exhaust being too high up ... which is where Buells and the Bimota tesi millenium really shine - the exhaust under the engine is the optimal place to put that weight.

I've always wondered how having the exaust exit down there effects the rear tire.....
