Since I was 16 I've been a huge geek, and this is one of the things that I've always kept up on. As far as HD-based MP3 players go, iPod is the bottem of the pack in terms of sound quality, computer based software, and customization.

The best I've found so far is my Rio Karma, which I would not give up for anything. Amazingly simple to setup, install, use, search, alter sound dynamics, everything.

I use my Jukebox 3 on the bike because it has individual buttons for everything. I clip it to my tank bag, and a glance down means I can stop, volume up/down, play, pause, or skip tracks.

Sorry if I'm getting to be a little in your face, but I have the same problem with people who drink Smirnoff and Crown Royal. There is better out there for the same price, but people buy the stuff they see on TV.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

They're all the same. People who buy mp3 players other than iPods do it because they want to be different and think that being different will make them important and interesting. People who buy iPods do it to be hip and trendy. I have a portable 8-track player strapped to my chest because I'm hardcore and drink my own urine! GO TWISTED SISTER!!!

Seriously though, I have an iPod 20GB and have only one complaint; you can't manually adjust the equalizer. That kind of bugged me at first. So far, however, sound quality is what I expected and I've had no problems with the battery.

I don't drink. But I suppose some people Like Crown Royal and Smirnoff. I didn't feel like you were in my face, but it wouldn't change anything if you had been. YOU not preferring the ipod doesn't mean it isn't a good... or even 'the best' product in it's category.

The experts also pick the ipod. Again, I don't have one - my wife loves hers. Don't understand the animosity toward a consumer product. I'm sure they both work well and people will get the one they prefer.
