Both yamaha and suzuki make good reliable bikes.

I would look each bike over to see how easy it is to perform basic maintenance. I have heard that it is very difficult to replace the oil filter on a yamaha 650 (2nd hand observation so maybe another 650 owner could confirm/deny this). If their larger models follow the same design flaw I would never own one myself since I do all my own work on my bikes.

c50 or v-star

i was looking at the same choices myself, found the c-50 to be a real good looking bike but chose the 1100 v-star instead. about the same weight wise, and i got a good year end deal on an 05 v-star 1100 for about the same price. the biggest negative so far is having to remove the front pipe and floor board to get to the oil filter, i will only be doing that once as i will install the filter relocation kit on the first oil change i do to it, and that, unfortunately, is about a $200 add-on, but will be doing my own changes so will save some cash in the future. otherwise i really like the bike, handles great, sure doesn't feel its weight, has all the power i need and i think it looks really sharp. So far i'm very happy with my new ride, but chose whatever makes you happy. i think they are both good bikes, just that i preferred the v-star.
Also, the 650 v-star doesn't have that oil filter changing problem, that's just on the 1100 v-star, so i was told.
good luck on your choice and ride safe.
