I think he pulled his hand brake to be cool, and lock his brakes
I dont think he was trying to be cool, I think he was genuinely trying to avoid the car in front. Problem is 1) he wasnt paying attention, 2) he LIED about it and tried to put the victim at fault, and 3) he probably pulled the ebrake thinking that would stop him quickly. Movies like "Fast and Furious" as someone mentioned give drivers bad ideas...this guy just couldn't drive worth a penny and the biker paid for his lack of skill and driving ability.

Stupid people happen...what makes me, and I think most everyone else, furious is that the guy lied about it. I also read on the originating thread that he had no insurance. Unbelievable!

There was no reason that guy needed to even pull on the brakes NOR swerve. I don't think he was 'genuinely trying to avoid the car in front of him' because there WAS no car in front ofhim for a good 200 feet or so! PLENTY of room to stop.

If you watch the video, the white car in front of him is going along steady. The honda appears to speed up (probably to fill in to a 1/4 car length gap as is standard on the freeway nowadays) and the white car slows down. The honda doesnt even notice until the last minute when he pulls his airbrained move. My guess, he wasnt paying attention, suddenly realized the car in front was going alot slower, and hit the brakes for all his might, then probably tried to move into the righthand lane to avoid the collision, and thanks to his superb lack of ability ended up locking the wheels and spinning the vehicle (nevermind not looking to see if any other vehicles were in the other lane).

The guy is an idiot, and he needs to be whipped for being a lying scumbag, but I seriously doubt he intended to spin out. Guys like that need to be riding the bus.

I think the guy pulled his parking brake, and only the right rear wheel locked up. I did not see any smoke from the left wheel, only the right. He should not be driving. How else can that happen on a dry road, sunny day, moderate traffic.

That guy is just an idiot. I drive a civic and in NY sometimes it's necessary to drive rather aggressively and decisively, what with yellow cabs ready to cut across 3 or 4 lanes of traffic at any moment, heaven forbid they should miss a fare. I'm sure that in my travels I've found occasion to get hard on the brakes and I have never for the life of me had my vehicle do that (swing the "O Ring" end around).

To my knowledge skidding in that manner without use of the handbrake is highly unlikely given the stellar road conditions. How poor would that brake system's condition have to be to effect a skid like that? On wet pavement MAYBE... And once he started to, there was absolutely no evidence of him trying to steer out of it. What an "O Ring".

In truth, my gut tells me he was trying to do some "cool" sh*t and it backfired. Again. What an "O Ring".

The silver Honda on her left see's the Civic about to swing into/across their lane and has hard controlled braking - they dont have anywhere else to go.

Gods only know where the Civic thought he was going he was U turning into oncoming traffic, he didn't try to steer out of it at all.

Fairly impressed with the first lady on the ground there. Makes sure that Dawn is conscious and focused, didn't try to remove her helmet and was generally helpful. Someone else called 911 straight off. Very impressed.

I thought briefly about what it would be like if Dawn had gotten 'pinched' between the Silver Honda and the Civic, not pretty.

This is probably the best example of why "all the gear all the time" mantra should be given to all new bikers - you can't trust other drvers even when you are in a contraflow system.

Just as an aside, Dawn and the outstanding first aider appear to have asian parentage, while the Civic driver has no neck.

I saw a friend wipe out in his car in a similar fashion... he was used to driving a standard and when he got into an automatic and needed to stop quickly, his reaction was to shove the clutch to the floor and threshhold brake... but in the automatic, his imaginary clutch ended up being the left side of the brake pedal... so it appeared that he just over-reacted and locked up his wheels at random. Maybe the dude in the civic did this kind of thing and was too embarassed to admit it:)

scary that at anytime stuff like this can happen.

Has there been any official information from the lady in the crash? Has it or when will this go to court? I sure would like to know when and the details of them hanging this guy who crashed her. That is what is important now.
