Me and my missus-to-be in Manila last summer.
I'm glad you told me you were in Manila cause I saw the writing on the sign behind you and I was going to ask. How did you like it? We were thinking about maybe taking a vacation there.)
Manila? My best advice is fly in, grab a hotel for a night to get rid of the jet lag then hop a plane to say Layte or somewhere else in the Philippines. Manila has got to be one of the direst and poorest cities I have ever visited. And according to a couple of my colleague's at work who are from Manila, it wasn't always like it is now, once it was a lovely place to visit.
Is your soon to be trouble and strife also from the Philippines?
No she's not but I want to go some place exotic and experience other cultures. I'm not really a touristy kind of person. I'd rather have an adventure.
Places in Europe well yeah there's other culture there but everybody kind of does that. I'm looking to do something a bit outside of the box.

You sound a bit like me, bugger the tourist traps and resorts, go to where the local live and really experience the place. In the meantime, here is a nice outdoor portrait of the 2 year old I was child minding last week. doc and I have been getting him acquainted with motorcycles.
