Something to think about....it won't be long before the weather gets, cold, damp and rainy....better go on that ride now...while the conditions are right.
PS.....Here on the west coast has weather and temps similar to England.

Ron and I have this agreement. I will ring him tomorrow and let him know if I think I'm going to be in a fit state to come down or not on the 21st. Yesterday, I bought a guide book to Roussillon and Languedoc. This evening I spent brushing up my French. The rest is in the lap of the gods.

But thanks for the encouragement, everyone. That's never wasted.

The US isn't that bad sv. . well some ways it is.....some ways not. I'd say it's like everything else, if you grew up in the system, you don't even really notice it.

Don't get me wrong ros - I'm not in any way 'anti-American' - or pro-American either, any more than I am anti- or pro-British. I just don't think in nationalistic terms. I have nothing against American people; the things that upset me are American government and American business interests.

And even then, I don't think that American goverment is any better or worse than government elsewhere. It all stinks. And the same goes for American business: it's now all part of a global system. It's just that because the U.S. establishment has so much more power, it also has the capacity to do so much more damage around the world - just as much to its own citizens struggling on a lousy wage or salary as on populations abroad.

I don't buy this myth of the benign intentions of Western states, North American or European. It is all just so much propaganda and hot air.

My saying this will no doubt upset some people but I'm not in a mood to hide my feelings right now. Every so often I get really upset about the carnage that corporations and their government lackeys create around the world and the way that they exploit ordinary people. The news channels are full of it at present. Iraq is looking like a bloodbath - and of course the horror facing ordinary Iraqi citizens is a million times worse than anything we are allowed to see.

So my loyalties don't lie with governments or commercial enterprises. My thoughts tend sideways not vertically. So yes, I am looking forward to visiting the U.S. in the not too distant future. I hear it's a beautiful place. And after all, I come from an Irish family on my mother's side, so I have more than a few American cousins and friends.

Lots of it is stunning.

I agree with you on the other points. I took the time to think about it once or twice and came to the same conclusion. It's a whole shedload of current wizards of oz, and potential wanna be wizards of oz.


Without the town full of sparkly midgets and the terminally perky witch of course. Well...i don't Think anyway. Like i said.....stay far away from War.

Whatever we may think about politics ( and I'd rather not think about them)....Oregon is an awesome state and Washington DC is fantastic. There is a lot of history there and of course The Smithsonian is there. The Smithsonian is worth the visit.

I'll second the Smithsonian recommendation!
And whenever you get around, you've gotta come down to Phoenix, AZ so I can finally meet the legendary SV-Wolf in person!

I'll third the smithsonian.

I was there last just as they opened the holocaust museum. I wouldn't walk in there unprepared.

If they would let me, I'd just put up a tent in the air and space.

Anything electrical and mechanical perks me right up too.
