I still continue to believe that you should talk to all motorcyclists about riding. It probably isn't a good idea to start saftey speeches with strangers, but with friends why not? I'm constantly nagging the people I ride with to wear their gear.
Once you get yakking with strangers bring up the saftey gear, end of the day all you can do is recommend it there's no reason to think yourself superior than someone else who doesn't wear gear. Heck, all the gear in the world won't save you in a high speed head on with an SUV.

How are airbags on a motorcycle going to help you?

The idea is that the airbag will slow your velocity when seperating from the bike thus lessening the injuries. Not sure how it will prove out but, that's the thinking behind it. It should also keep the rider from getting injured by striking or getting caught on the handlebars and, possibly, the windshield.

That's the idea. Given the nature of most motorcycle crashes. the rider rarely stays on the machine. Airbags on the bike would be wasted in these situations. Addtionally, since you're not held on by restraints, bike mounted airbags could actually knock you off.
Putting the airbags on the rider would seem to be the most logical place to use them. That's where they'll be most effective.
I've seen some slow motion films of the airbag jacket and it looks pretty promising. I don't know that I'd wear one, but it seems that they've got the concept down.

Many accidents between motorcycles and cars involve the motorcyclist hitting a car turning left in front of him. Perhaps motorcyclists should wear automatically activated parachutes to slow them down as they fly over their handlebars.

I'd prefer automatically activated ray guns that would de-materialize any left-turning klown-driven cage in front of me!!!

Ejection seats! Triggered by one of those front end sensors that are used to trigger the airbags in cars.
