I do. If the lane is clear, a right turn on a red is perfectly legal. The mid-intersection lane change is not legal to protect the folks making a right on red.
It isn't best practice, but its not bad practice either.

As I said previously, it's illegal here.
The bad practice is changing lanes during a left hand turn where there are two left turn lanes.
Oh don't get me started on these guys :frusty: I'll bet that 1/2 of my evasive manuevers in the cage and on the bike are avoiding these "drifters". We even have nifty dashed lines to follow all the way through the turn and they still don't get it.

Well my advice is don't do it here... 'cause you are liable to violate someone's right of way and be at fault in an accident.

Yeah, but so is filtering... so that's hardly a good argument that it should be illegal. :)

Yeah, people who do that suck. It's a pet peeve of mine 'cause I do know the proper line to follow... and half the time I can't follow it 'cause those idiots are cutting or drifting or doing who knows what. :frusty:

i'd probably be pissed at him, but if i started turning left(intentionally or unintentionally) when he came next to me....i'd be like "fudge" , i should've looked over the shoulder before i turned.
So you'd be mad at him for doing what you just did?

Maybe you should think about that next time you do something stupid.

I went for a ride with a friend a while back. We were waiting to turn right at a red light, there were two lanes coming towards us. There were 4 or 5 cars in the far lane, and the close lane (the one I was going to turn into) was empty. Because we had gotten there as the light turned red (for us) all the cars were lined up waiting to go. So I did a full stop, and put my foot down. Checked left then went.

Car suddenly slammed on its brakes behind me. The lady had changed lanes in the intersection and figured that I'd cut her off. Changing lanes in the intersection is illegal, but she blamed me for the near accident.

I don't know if passing on the left in a residential area is illegal... but it seems to me that if it's anything like my area you just crossed a solid yellow line (no passing). You're blaming this guy for your mistake.

To compound that problem, you slammed on your brakes and locked up your tire, indicating that you're still not in full control of your bike...
no double yellow line...no line at all.

also, i wouldn't really be "mad" at him for passing me on the left at that speed...i'd just be like "oh sh*t" and that's it....what pisses me off is that this guy started turning.

and unless i was going ALOT slower....i wouldn't have passed him in time.

A right on red, unless otherwise posted, is legal. Changing lanes in an intersection isn't, and is flat stupid.

Actually in CA, it might be a toss up. The person turning right on red must yield to oncoming traffic and the person changing lanes can do it only if it is safe to do so. Kind of ambiguous.

I'll make you a deal, I won't turn right on red in CA if there's anyone on the road, and you don't change lanes in an intersection in AZ (or NY, MA or WI)
