Finding straight from the Hurt Study http://www.magpie.com/nycmoto/hurt.html

43. Seventy-three percent of the accident-involved motorcycle riders used no eye protection, and it is likely that the wind on the unprotected eyes contributed in impairment of vision which delayed hazard detection.

Other interesting findings as well, check it out.

That study is 30 years old.

I really, really, really wish they'd reproduce it today. I'm sure the numbers (especially with regards to training and protection) would be dramatically different.

It's not 30 years old:

California 90007, Contract No. DOT HS-5-01160, January 1981 (Final Report)

I doubt the stats would change much. People's driving and riding habits haven't changed that much in those few years. Plus if you look around the state of Colorado, most riders wear minimal protection (eyeglasses & gloves.) Also, if you look at the demographics of the people involved in the majority of accidents are those that are least likely or able to afford to take an MSF training course.

Plus the majority of people driving in 1981 are still on the road today.

How's the eye doing Flyin?

I'm hoping for a report of "in good health" with no loss of vision.

Getting better is good enough though.

The data is from 1979.

It's 27 years old. I rounded up.

I'd really like to know why you think things are so much different today.

The MSF was in its infancy. High performance bikes are much more prevalent, especially those under 25. There are a ton of middle-aged people taking up biking these days, which probably wasn't the case in the late 70s. Bike technology has advanced significantly. The MSF was in its infancy. Helmet laws are now prevalent througout the country.

I know I wasn't around back then, but it seems like the laws, training, and demographics of "bikers" has changed significantly. I think this would reflect in the statistics.

Thanks for asking. Well, the eye itself is OK and the vision is good, but over the weekend the infection spread from the area around the eye to the whole left side of my face. Just got back from the doc this morning and he said it's shingles (viral infection). What kind of bug-from-hell did I run into?

Looks like I'm going to have a few weeks of pain and a scary looking face. This really sucks!
