Very well, the hardware on the iPod still remains inferior for video and audio output. Putting a super high quality video codec (many of which creative has native) will still result in a lesser quality picture (or sound) due to the native distortion in said unit.
Not to mention the fact you need to illegally modify an iPod to get something comparable to a creative. Makes me wonder....

Illegal?
Can Microsoft or Apple sue you for putting Linux on the computer you purchased with their OS already on there?
I have heard of no such cases and Linux is becoming much more popular.
Infact I find the Linux/Novell/Microsoft tryst thingy funny.

And as I already mentioned, RockBox can be removed with no trace left behind. Therefore, unless you're dumb enough to tell them that you put it on there then they have no way of knowing.
I always keep a backup of the original firmware on solid state storage.

And when the HD craps out and you cannot access it to remove the firmware changes?

By that time the warranty will have worn out.
iRivers are very good machines, I don't expect mine to crapout anytime soon. Also, if the drive does crap out I can easily replace it.
What I'm worried about going first is the battery, but that's also easily replaceable.
But that shouldn't be anytime in the near future.
