
What did you start on?
I started on the street on a 1985 Honda VFR700R Interceptor. I'm sure it was a lot more of a bike than I needed to be starting on, but luckily(?) it was 10 or 11 years old and in bad enough condition that it was underpowered compared to where it should have been. Unfortunately it handled pretty poorly too (center of gravity way too high on that bike, imho).
... I never have ridden a dirtbike. That would be cool to try sometime though.

A good starter
A good starter would be the Hyosung Alpha Sport GV250 Classic
They use this bike at alot of the schools.
