650's are bad learner bikes, 650's are good learner bikes?

I'm below the lonesome newbie. I'm going to be going into the MSF here in a month or two.. I have no experience on a motorcycle of any sorts but have dreamed of riding one all of my life. I'm sixteen years old and scared to death of bikes, but so intrigued and excited by the thought of crusing down the highway with my bro and friends beside and behind me. Plus, who doesn't love the gas mileage?

I'm a cruiser type of personality, i don't care for a crapton of instant-go. I just want to, quite simply cruise. Anyway, to the point. I'm a bit overweight for a kid my age and height, but moderately strong. Would a Honda Magna 500 be too much for starting?

in regards to the question of first bikes... well im a new rider and for my first bike i got a used 2002 Suzuki SV650s... while in general its a great bike... i think it to be a bit too much for a first time rider... im in that regret stage at the moment... ive had the bike for a little over a month but ive got it on the market (anyone interesteD?)

the bike is pretty light but its really top heavy... im looking at going down to the Ninja 250.. in fact i put a downpayment on one just a few days ago... but its all a matter of comfort....

i took a spill nothing too serious.. but i locked up my front tire breaking at a light... wasnt upset when it happened.. more concerned about the bike more than anything... ended up with lots of lovely dark bruises on my knees and hip... some nice road rash through the jeans and my joe rocket jacket...
i had been pretty comfortable on it then.. but after getting it back from the shop an gettin on.. i got really shaky.. an had to just put it in the garage... subconsciously im afraid of it now.... and if your afraid of your bike.. your bound to kill yourself... so when you're looking at bikes i suggest that if it scares you at all in anyway.. even if some of you guys dont want to admit it... steer away from it... find something that your like hey.. i can ride that.. im comfortable...

im going for that comfort.. the 250 Ninja is a bike i know i can ride.. thats what i rode in my MSF course... cus if i stay on the suzuki SV650s.. im gonna end up killin myself...

well there you have my unprofessional opinion

I have an SV650. I love it.

I put 16,000 miles on a Ninja 250 before I got the SV650.

I understand how you feel. I think the SV650 is a TERRIBLE beginner bike. As my second bike, I absolutely love it.

The Ninja 250 is 36HP and the SV650 is about 69HP. Big difference.

I think you are making a wise decision. I bet you'll be a lot happier and a lot more comfortable downgrading to the Ninja and coming back to something like the SV when you get more miles under your belt.

I still don't think there's anything wrong with an SV650(S) as a first bike, provided one goes in armed with the proper knowledge. Trying to figure everything out on the go is a bad idea in the first place, in my opinion - and a prescription for pain regardless of the bike chosen. Choose smaller, and hopefully the dose of pain is smaller when you try the wrong way around an issue.
