After 6 years of band (Middle school/high school) you pick up a thing or two about pitch.
I played the French Horn - at least it wasn't the flute... - and it's a difficult instrument to get the correct pitch going. But by the time I graduated I could pick out almost any song on the horn.
I've been playing guitar for two years (or three? not sure) and haven't gotten to that point yet, but I figure it's the same concept. One day I'll have an epiphone and go "Oh, ok I see now" and the fretboard will go from a bunch of frets (the way I currently see it) to a bunch of notes and I'll be able to pick out a note without having to think of the string I'm on then following the frets up step by step.
That's how the transition was on the horn. Just one day I went 'ah, I see now' and it all made sense from there.
And that's definately not natural talent, it took me a long time to get to that stage lol.
HEY!!! I played flute in 6th grade!
And yeah, I think everyone who has played guitar has learned stairway to heaven, verm.

I still have yet to even look at the Stairway tab. Sad huh? I've just never had the desire to learn Stairway.
It's a nice song but I think it's seriously overrated. Going to California, Battle for Evermore, Over the Hills and Far Away, and Achilles Last Stand are just a few of the better songs IMO.

I'm thinking Kashmir is one of their best...

Kashmir is good too. I always seem to overlook it though.
Like I said I was in the band and we always played this school that would just blast Kashmir as loud as they good. That's like, the only song they seemed to know.
And they didn't even play it well. Their goal was to be as loud with it as possible, tone and rhythym be damned. I think they ruined the song for me.

I heard they bought a castle to perform that song in (to get the acoustics for the drums).
It might be the same castle that, supposedly, inspired Stairway to Heaven. I'm not sure about the chronology of their songs though so I couldn't tell you.
But since they're both on IV I'd imagine they were written around the same time.
Oh and driving up to meet some relatives for Easter, Immigrant Song came on. That's the first time my sister (she was riding with me) ever heard someone wail the beginning part. Incidentally it was also the first time she heard the song. Scared the crap out of her lol.

On their first US tour, Zepp toured with the band "Spirit" Jimmy Page "lifted" the guitar riff for Stairway from their song "Taurus"
