Yes, but its a supersports bike...

The calculations arent just done on how much it costs to replace your bike but also how likely they believe you are to have an accident - if you are found liable than they are responcible for the otehr vehicle as well...

They'll calculate your premium on the likelyhood that they are going to have to eat the cost of that bike during the life of the policy. If you're talking full coverage, that includes the liklihood that it'll be stolen as well as damaged in an accident.

I've seen some quotes that would curl your hair. The quote for a 16 yr. old kid with a brand new license, riding a new 'busa, will approach the purchase price of the bike for one year's coverage. Meaning that the company fully expects to eat the cost of that bike before the year is up.

First off, many of the larger bases run some kind of MSF program - some are free, some cost a few bucks. Even if the base doesn't run a program, the states run programs, and if you are in the military, you'll be able to get a discount.

They can't expect you to take the course if they don't make it available to you. Most bases also require you to wear reflective gear on top of your regular riding gear. (Something like a reflective safety vest.) Icon makes the nicest one on the market right now - http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/it ... Division=1

insurance - you have to call around. Once you get into the military, you will have the option of using USAA for your banking and insurance needs. IMO USAA provides the best insurance value, plus you can do all your banking thru them as well. This is good for a few reasons - chief among them is that wherever the Military may send you, USAA will be able to cover you (Unlike most insurance companies who don't cover you overseas)

If you want the best rate, you have to get an older bike. For example, my 800cc BMW (1991) only costs $250 per YEAR. I also have a 1982 Yamaha 650 that costs $175 per YEAR. These rates will drop once I hit 30 - And I also have speeding tickets on the record, so these rates are higher than normal.

Must agree with Tech concerning USAA, they will provide coverage thru Progressive. I'm 39 y/o, with my first bike, ('93 Nighthawk 750), and I pay $109/year for comprehensive and collision.
Granted, I'm a little over 18 years old with a clean driving record, and I'm not straddling a 'Busa, but if you can get on with USAA by being military or dependent, it's the way to go.
