That's another thing I don't get. How is an inferior bike a status symbol?
I guess it is just the stigma of having a Harley. If you've always wanted one, nothing is going to stop you from getting it.

You could make the argument that BMW or Mercedes cars are inferior to japanese counterparts (In terms of performance and value) but people still buy them.
Anyone who buys Harley simply because they think it's a Status symbol probably doesn't know much about bikes in the first place.

That isn't always true either. I've known people who bought Harleys knowing they were inferior. They just wanted that name.

Funny, this tread is about someone being "dissed" for not riding a Harley, or someone putting down someone elses ride... but many of you have no problem putting Harleys down... most I am betting have never ridden one. HD has a 2 year warranty... and some people are attracted to the "American Made" aspect... even if some parts aren't made in this country etc.. it is an American Company... I love the new bobber it is very unique, and all 3 VRSC bikes are awesome looking and from what I understand they perform well, although I haven't ridden all 3. Just because there is another bike that can do everything a Harley does for less money doesn't mean everyone has to buy that bike instead... If that were the case mercedes, bmw, etc would all be out of business.

Every maker of any machine is going to have people who like them or dislike them. Same goes for Chevy, Ford, GMC or a Dodge. (I own one of each LOL). As for American made, I am all for that also. My 2003 Honda Sabre 1100 is American made, in Ohio. Now granted, the parts may be imported but an American, making a living, made my bike even if it has the Japanese name on it. I am not going to bash anyone for what ever they like or dislike even if it is chicken soup. The last big bike gathering I went to had about an even number of every make out there. It was cool the way everyone mingled and talked bikes. I didn't hear one word on who had the best just because of what name was on it. This weekend I am going to attend a huge rally and I am sure there will be a mix of bikes there also.

Gotta agree with this guy, I always wanted a Harley but couldn't afford one so I tried to turn my 1100 Shadow Spirit into one. Louder pipes, more chrome, jet kit, K&N filter, engine guard, Mustang seat etc. They still dissed me, funny though I don't care any longer since I bought my current bike (see sig pic) and they don't diss me anymore. I'd still love to have a Harley but will never be able to afford one

I think the point is it's always the same story. I've never heard of anyone going up to a Harley owner and asking them when they're going to get a "real" bike. It's always people who like Harleys that look down on owners of other makes.

The question Really is: If you could afford one - would you then get one? Why do you want a Harley - What's it got that your current bike doesn't?
