How many miles can you get out of the average bike?

Like any machine, a motorcycle just needs proper maintenance and care. With that, I don't see a problem with some motorcycle models going over 100,000. I know of a sportbike (a 1999 Suzuki SV650) still going at 135,000 miles. But it's worn, but still alive.

actually, no. most chevys come with the 3.73 gears (standard in the Z-71 package which you see on 9 out of 10 trucks) but other than that you're spot on


MMkay, they've changed it up some then in the recent years (I forget it is '07!). My Z71 had the 342s, as well as most the trucks on the ORC forum (since '99 anyway). But we tossed in a new axle with 373s when a carrier bearing esploded! :shock: I guess Chrevrolet finally listened and some of that changed what the Z71 package included, which was around the new body style time. Incidently our '99 Tahoe Z71 did have the 373s.

It's a fact spinning a motor fast puts more stress on it than spinning it slowly. It's rougher on a motor to have low displacement and wind the crap out of it than to have high displacement and low revs.

I expect 80-100k miles from an air cooled japanese bike, a water cooled bike should go much further with reasonable care. I've owned 6 air cooled bikes, no water cooled ones yet.

Traded my first bike, a new 81 CB400T, in on a new CB750K after 6 mo and 6k miles. Put 80k miles on that CB750K.

Bought a like new CM400A in 1990 with 2k miles on it. Pulled the head at 30k miles to fix a small oil leak and ran that bike till it had 98k miles on it, no real engine work, just a seal fix that is common with older like new bikes that have sat till the seals dry out. Gave it to a friend and it has over 100k miles on it now and still runs like new.

Bought a used 85 CB650SC with 10k miles on it and put another 50k on it before I traded it in on a new 97 GS500E. The Nighthawk had started smoking rather badly when hot and I suspect it was abused by a previous owner.

Put 80k miles on that 97 GS500E and when it was totalled I bought a 02 GS500 which now has 46k miles on it and should go the 80-100k miles expected.
407,211 miles in 30.1 years for 13,528 miles/year average. Started 7/21/84, updated 8/26/14

I've had my bike for 5 weeks, and already have 1660 miles on it. It looks like according to MOTO I'll need a new one in about 6 months. Man, I financed my bike too. :cry: I guess I'll be without a bike for a long time until I finish paying for this one. That sucks cause I really love this bike to.

But it's aweful funny that my hubbies last bike had 110,000 mile (with nothing more major that brakes, new tires etc.) when he got run off the road and wrecked it. It probably would have had more if it weren't for a moronic idiot!
