Well these are pics of the 61 BMW before anything is done. Took these last month (then lost flash card and found again today) I have changed all fluids, cleaned carbs and tank. New battery and bike now runs (parked since 87) Tyres are really scarry, but will not be changed till center stand is fixed (this bike will not fit on my lift with out crushing or pulling exhaust pipes)

Well the 61 is now being pulled apart for paint and work. I put on about 400 miles even with the drive shaft boot homemade from old inner tube. The gaskets on both cylinders leak. And something in rear is leaking (possible seal) causing brakes to grab.

Last week took it for a ride and filled up the gas tank and guess what it leaks(cracked). That is now fixed (welded). Clutch seems to bind every now and then. (Probably just need lubed ) The rust is still quite apparent in gas tank. Keeps plugging filter.

Need new front tyre, changed rear but did not have one narrow enough for front 3.25-3.50 or 90/90-100/90....18 Also want to install winkers but switch is on backorder. Also found the right mirror but it is broken will need new mirror, stem and body are serviceable.(found a whole box of parts for this bike---hack mounts, Magra controls/levers,extra cables, old clutch, pistons, rings from last rebuild, extra Bilix light bulb.) New Stadium mirrors cost 67each + shipping (GBP not $)

For a 600cc that is pushing 50 this thing really runs. (probably couldn't keep up with the triumphs of the day but the electrics work)

Waiting for battery to charge for camera so no pics now.

Problem with Camera is not batteries as I found out. Acts like contact in switch itself, will not know till I take apart.

Over Memorial Weekend I picked up Honda postie parts bike I bought on E bay back in December. Decription said seized motor but it kicks over with compression. It does have a few parts in better shape than the other posties.

Done a pressure test on BMW tank I welded last week---no leaks, but still need to deal with inside rust before I paint. (filling with water to weld cracks didn't help rust situation) Pulling it (BMW) apart as I get the time (only about 2 hours this week) Bolts will be a problem upon reassembly as I have found 5/16 dia bolts that are SAE fine, SAE course and Whitworth, in addition to the 8mm that it is suppose to have. (These are different bolts that all have same part number---I guess the good news is no BSF and all metric have the same pitch)

Will I ever get 61 done, wish it would storm. Three days in a row I went to garage to work on the 61 and didn't get past the Gold Wing (I have put 500 miles on it in last 3 days , about 350 was just running errands and not pleasure riding, but never got over 50 miles away from home, my other bikes are planning a mutiny) Anyway got front swingarm off 61 (bolt threads were extreamly rusted, (thank God for Liquid Wrench, had to soak for two days) but berings were still greased and good, and will have never-seize when reassembled) now I am stuck till I go to Pueblo as I can no longer buy sand here. (Silica for sand blaster)

Got stitches out of forehead Monday and can wear helmet again.

Glen bought a 77 R100/7 Monday. Got a good deal because tranny (3rd gear cluster) is shot. (also got a spare tranny with same problem) I have an extra but have never used so do not know how it is (still in parts bike) Bike looks good full Vetter w/lowers, bates bags and trunk, 115lbs in both sides. good Tyres and new sealed battery. Seller has a 2008 LT in garage with paper tag still on it! (Glen always buys bikes with good rubber and a shot tranny)

Seems things are going pretty well for you, but where do the stitches come in??? What'd you go and do to yourself?

Wrider Did you know that those arms on RV awnings are spring loaded????
When you fold them and don't lock they spring back. This one (I found arm while camping completely alone at 7 am)got me right between the eyes about 9 stitches worth. Took about twenty minutes to find all five peices of my glasses. I still had to break camp tent everything, before I could drive the 45 miles to the nearest hospital.(Grand Junction) Whole time a steady stream of blood dripping off the end of my nose. My usual Memorial day camping spot (Grand Mesa) still had 5 feet of snow this year, and still coming down, so I wound up somewhere near DeBeque Canyon.

When I got to the Family Reunion everyone said they weren't worried about me because I was in the car this year. Guess I showed them that I don't need a bike or any thing motorized or any help to f**k myself up.

As a guy who lives in a 35' 5th wheel yea, they're spring loaded! Sounds like you learned that in a hurty! Glad you're ok, those things HURT! (Coming from a 21 yo that's gotta mean something! )
Wow though, that's a heck of a thing to do, break camp and drive home while bleeding like that doesn't sound fun!
BTW, if you ever end up in Gunnison, let me know, got a friend up there that wants to learn how to ride on (pillion) a bike. Cute 19 yo girl, figure you're up for it

Not much fun Blogs without pics. Need to get digital fixed still. (just switched back to 35MM) No camera repair shops here.

Glen picked up a 77 R100/7 (fully dressed Vetter and Bates, Russell Day Long) But needs trans (no 3rd gear and hopps in 5th) Anyway another trans is coming from Texas. (I almost bought this bike myself but I already have to roll 1 or 2 outside to work in shop)

Dragging my feet on 61. Got leaking gaskets replaced now I need to pull motor (last thing except wiring left in frame, frame, pedals, rear swing arm and gas tank are only things left to blast before paint) Got paint and stripes today. Too hot to go in blasting chamber today anyway. still need to put new tyre on rim, and fill and sand dents and dings (only two, the sheet metal was really thick back then about 3-4 times as thick as modern Harley as BMW now uses plastic)

Found out some more about the 61. Left cyl. has been resleaved. Both cyls. are R60 not R69S (smaller bore, less compression, little less power but can run regular gas) Throttle, clutch/brake perches are Triumph not BMW (I also have a set of Magra Perches but enduro style not stock) Also both push rods on left need to be replaced ASAP (the ones in it have been mangled and brazed up by previous a owner, but are working for now)

Also plan to install rear swing arm pivots from a /6 (they are drilled an do not require removal of swing arm to grease bearings) Am also planning to add zerk to front swing arm for same reason. Am also putting on the smaller S/M seat (It's in better shape than large S/M seat) Decided to pass on installing solo. Was giong to install blinkers but am having problems finding a switch and bulbs. (all the switches I find are ground out and not in circuit, all bulbs are 12V)

Cleaned and reinstalled carbs on /6 (3 weeks ago) but still haven't put on fuel line. (can't get close enough to bike to work on) So i am still riding Wing (man you get hot in traffic on the Wing)

Got the digital camera working for now. No camera shop here so I took apart and sprayed with WD 40. (on off switch seems to be the problem) If this don't keep working, next trip to Springs will look at new cameras. (only place to buy them here is Wally World)

Here are pictures of 61 in it's present (all apart) state. Thunderstorm just before pictures means that several bikes and other stuff was put in garage at last minute. (IN RAIN) It was a nice day and I was working on parts of bike in yard when storm came. (from North and building was blocking view of storm until it was here)

Only have frame and tank left to strip then Paint and reassembly. Assuming that I can work steady on this bike without interuptions like Glen's tranny. Or like problems with rentals. (and of course weather MUST cooperate)

Image

Of course now comes all the little things that add up and take a lot of time. (and the question that keeps coming up with every part--Do I reinstall, repaint, repair, refurbish or replace it---usually biggest factor is budget, If I was Bill Gates I would replace everything) Some parts can be found NOS, some are still avail. from BMW, others are re-poped but many are only avail. used and must be reworked before use.

Running short on time. Bike (61 BMW) is painted and hopefully assembled today. Plan to ride it to Wyoming tomorrow. The few pics I took will be posted at a later date.
