Always buy new when possible, you know it wasn't abused or not maintained correctly and keep in mind you get the full warranty.
As someone said above, it is a cruiser, not a sport bike, gearing is a big part. Buy the biggest bike you can and just ride responibly!
Take the MSF course! It is well worth it. Just remember to pay attention not only to what you are doing, but what everyone around you is doing.
When you see someone in a car that looks like they are going to pull out in front of you, drive like they will! Because they probably will anyway!
Just be responsible and take your time! Don't relax to soon! When you relax to soon, that is when you drop it!
As for the people who say buy used because you will drop it or let it fall over.... Don't believe that! I know alot of people who never dropped or knocked a bike over and I have to say, I don't know anyone who has dropped one personally!
Just be carefull and you will be fine!
