Some of the technology I used I don't really recommend as I had issues using it.
Now it may be because I got an older model, but the spot messenger and GPS tracker really didn't perform that well for me.
I was lucky, I set the tracking and it worked when I left the morning for the SS1000, but on the return trip days, I had a lot of issues in getting the the unit to tracking mode - and the lights on the unit just didn't work well enough to tell me if it was tracking or not.
It could be user error, so I don't want to badmouth it too much, and I'm pretty much stuck with it - for $97 for the unit and $150 for the years 911 and tracking service, but there might be better tracking units out there.
The idea was to have the unit track my GPS coordinates, and
1) If I got in to trouble, I could trigger the 911 call no matter where I was and the authorities would be notified
2) My wife would know by looking at my tracking that the last x number of tracks (1 per 10 minutes) were at the same location and send me a text to ask me if I was ok.
3) Whenever I stopped I would send an OK message - and this would send a text to my wife with my coordinates whenever I stopped.
There are other units that offer some similar technology... Don't know about the OK message and 911 call.
Anyway, I have a GPS trail for my trip for the SS1000 and that's good. Maybe I'll figure out how to get the device to work properly every time I set up the tracking.
