Seen the price of .223 ammo lately? :shock:

Just for that I'd be looking strongly at the other calibers, but take this recently-returned-to-shooting newbie's advice with a lot of NaCl.

DPMS makes an AR-10 in .243, unfortunately it's a heavy SOB at 10.5 lbs empty.

How about a carbine in 7.62x39? It's not the fastest round out there, but it's pretty close to the .30-30. Several outfits make ARs in this chambering. The Olympic Arms version weighs 7.8 lbs.

Still on the "find Shorts a rifle" train of thought. Have you looked at the Browning BAR? 6lbs 10oz for the BAR ShortTrac Stalker in .243.
I'll admit that I know practically nothing about this line of rifles, but it'd at least be another direction to explore.

Are you back in CONUS now?
