I already talk a lot to the kids about how important it is for them to begin their independent life right after high school. My reasoning is twofold; One, I do think it's important for the whole family for kids to leave the nest as soon as they become legal adults. It's sort of that "it worked for me" attitude, I suppose. But anyway, the second reason is so that I can take my trips without having to worry about anything else. In order for a "Mom" to leave the home, there are some details that have to be handled before she can take off. And the same goes for single parents, obviously in an even more complicated way.
I do get my long weekends away, and I'm really hoping for three weeks during the Summer of '08. But in order for that trip to happen, it will require a lot of planning on my part - activities for the kids during Scan's work day, setting up a good schedule for chores and such, what exactly do I buy at Trader Joe's, etc... Scan will survive for three weeks with the kids - I know that - but it feels important to me to help give him the easiest way possible.
So yes, even though I will miss my kids terribly when they're grown and gone, at least I'll have lots of free time on my bike for healthy meditation.
Cheers,
Loonette
