"Casimir Pulaski Day" by Sufjan Stevens - can't get through singing it without getting choked up. "The Day the Music Died" by Don McLean. Although... there's a cool little video featuring the song here...

Filmed in Grand Rapids, Michigan - might so far be the longest single shot clip out there. Great lip sync!!
Cheers,

today i played some releases by female artists, or with female vocalists (The Braids - Lemonade, is one song title that sticks in my head, and a couple tunes by First Aid Kit were great examples of modern music), but then I threw on some classic blues and remembered how the simple layers of fun lyrics, horns, rhythm and seering guitar (and vocals) of the blues still continues to kick butt

on modern music in it's own way ... so today's note is for...
"Buddy Guy - She Suits Me to A Tee"
dont forget your roots

Sticking with the jazz theme for now I have 2 particular favourites.......
God Bless the Child.......Billie Holiday.
I know a jazz duo (the key board player/siner is Canadian), & if I am in a venue thay always sing this for me. Know particular memories stirred but makes me feel emotional about my own girls.
Strange Fruit..........Nina Simone
I love her voice & the darkness of this song has always struck me. However, originally I didn't know what the lyrics referred to. For those that sre not familiar with it (& you really should hear it), it is actually about the lynching of blacks in the Deep South of the USA. For some reason this resonates & I find it a very powerful song.

Speeding Cars - Imogen Heap
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley
Fix You - Coldplay

I'll have to agree with "Hallelujah" but I much perfer K.D. Lang's version. I first heard her sing it during the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, just wish I saw it live...

Ok, I will NEVER admit to bawling like a girl and this isn't really a song like you're talking about but I have to mention it...the tune they play in the movie "Brian's Song" when Gale Sayers tells his teammates that Brian Piccolo has cancer...those who have seen it will know what I'm talking about...it's ok to admit it...that tune will make any full-grown man cry like a baby!!!
I just had a shot of Jack Daniels to re-establish my manhood.
Immediate attention get'r...the start of Sweet Home Alabama...who doesn't know that one? Any Skynyrd song gets me up.

i just listened to this with a slideshow of related photos on youtube .... whew!!! powerful. dark. sad.
a sad reflection on the sheer stupidity and ugliness of humanity. i.e. the white race. people with too much power in there hands and so little understanding and so much fear and hate.

Memphis Soul Stew -- King Curtis
