so i got the chance to watch it last night after i recorded it last sunday, still need to watch the main event.

but damn! those 250cc bikes runs fast. what type of engine do those have?

are they also inline 4? i know the 500s are inline 4s but what about the 250?

The 250s are two stroke v-twins (most are anyway). They are hellishly fast and it has got to be one of the most competetive classes in racing. The premier class used to be 500cc two strokes and all had evolved into v-fours by the end of the line. They introduced 990cc four strokes to the premier class about 5 years ago and phased the 2 strokes out after that. The set-ups vary from inline 3s to v-fours to inline 4s to V-fives.

there are only 3 engine configurations used on motoGP bikes at the moment.

and V5

Kawasaki and Yamaha run inline 4s and they use a big bang type firing order that fires 2 cylinders at once

the honda RC211V runs a v5 that is set up like an inline 4 with a 5th cylinder tacked on the side

ducati runs a V4 with the same big bang firing order as the inlines

suzuki runs a v4 with a conventional firing order and has the rep of being the first motorcycle ever built that requires computer assistance to ride it.

the reasoning for firing 2 cylinders at once on the kawasaki, yamaha, and ducati is to space the power pulses apart more to build high power but still keep a controllable powerband. Apparanrly even the wheelie control systems on the motoGP bikes dont work that well with the 250+hp the bikes are running

In the Premier Class, yes (the 990cc bikes). Verm is asking about the 250cc MotoGP bikes

But he mentioned the 500cc class and I took us on a tangent.
The inline 3 configuration that Aprillia used in the past is not dead yet either. Honda is reportedly working on an inline 3 for next year when the rules change to 800cc

I believe the Honda RC51 is based on the RC211V, but that's the only one that I know about. I believe part of the requirements of MotoGP is that the bikes aren't homologated - ie, based on production bikes. WSBK bikes are highly tuned and tweaked production bikes, whereas MotoGP bikes are Factory creations made strictly for MotoGP racing - they are the pinnacle of technical innovation in motorcycle racing.

The RC-51 is a production V-Twin which itself was based on the original VTR1000 (see my avatar). The RC211V is a V-five formula one racer. They do not share any two parts.

Thanks for the correction Bruce. I wasn't quite sure about that one. I'm probably confused because there is an RC51 here in Sylvan done up in Repsol Honda racing colors.

well yeah, but high side said, the model of bikes in motGP are gonna be production bikes in the future.

so i was wondering if there are already 250 and 500 production bikes w/ the same specs already.
