Dealer advice...

I love being a newb...especially with so many people willing to help me.
I'm planning to buy a used bike, but I've been going to dealerships 'cause I don't know where else to go to to see these machines up close. Stopped at two local dealerships on my lunch today. Said something along the lines of: "I'm totaly new to motorcycles, never ridden anything, haven't taken a motorcycle training course or anything... I want a good easy tame bike to learn on... what do you recommend?"
Anyone care to guess the answers?
BTW: I just signed up for a safety class....can't wait to start.

let me guess. this 600cc sport bike is a great starter bike. Something along those lines? as for where to get used bikes. Classifyed, craigs list, cycle trader, local bike shops.

They recommended nothing below 800cc for a cruiser or 600cc for a sportbike is my guess.

They both started off with 1100CC cruisers (v-stars). One, when I pointed to the GS500F, said "it is old technology and you will be bored wth it really quick, get at least the SV650" (which I've heard isn't a bad first bike actually but still). The other was showing me 4-cylinder 750s and 600s, most in the $9,000 and up range. GSXRs among others.
I always wondered about the stories of people getting a bunch of advice on good first bikes then going out and buying a fire breathing monster. I understand it a little better now.
BTW: Finding used bikes isn't a problem...the problem is that very few private sellers have 20 different models lined up so I can see what people are talking about.
I'll start looking up used bikes after I have my motorcycle endorsement.

What a bunch of "Donut Holes"! Which dealership was that? I'll be sure to avoid it.

That describes every dealership I have been to.
The guy called the kawi 250 a girls bike and pointed us straight for the kawi 650.
I politely let him know that calling the 250 a girlie bike did not sway our interest and surprisingly he switched gears.

The sales guy at McBrides Cycles in Toronto certainly didn't do that. He suggested ninja 250, but approved of my choice of ninja 500. If I didn't move to LA, I would have certainly gone back to that dealership and bought the bike from them.

They were just the two closest... one was in Riverside (scott somthing) and the other was Corona..., both just off the 91.

I personally would advise against financing a Ninja 250,500, or a GS500. Some people will be happy with 30hp or 40hp bikes, but most people I have seen quickly grow out of such bikes. You dont really want to finance a bike for 3 or 4 years that you MIGHT outgrow in 6 months.
If you want a 500cc bike to learn on, I would suggest getting one used.

If the bike is being financed, can't you sell it and use the money to pay off the loan?
