when do all of you lock up your bike?
at night in the garage (w/ all doors closed and locked)?
while paked in front off you office building?
when you go to the store to pick up 2-3 items?
parked in front of your/friends house?
also what lock/locks are the best for different situations? disc locks, chains, alarms? its all very confusing to me but i really dont want to get ripped off.
thanks.

Welcome to the forum!
I don't lock my bike when it's in the garage. I actually leave the key in it, so it doesn't get lost. When I'm making a quick stop at a store or at a friend's house, I generally just use the fork lock. At work we have security guards and cameras all over, so I just use the fork lock there as well. If I ever have to leave my bike in an unsecured area for more than a few minutes, I bring along my U-lock and attach the bike to something that won't move.

I locked mine everytime it was out of sight.
Of course CeeGee was still stolen because they were able to just lift her up and carry her away.
Big "O Ring" chain locked to something immovable is the best way to go.
If the bike is valuble enough it is probably worth fitting Lo-jack system or a paging alarm. I intend fitting a paging alarm to my partners trike in the near future.

I have a friend that did the same thing... Until he was burglerized... They took the bike and the keys.

My four bikes live in my garage with the keys usually in them. The beagle also sleeps there. Oh, did I forget to mention that the rottweiler also has access to the garage 24/7?
Actually in my neighborhood, theft is not that big an issue. Elsewhere I use the fork lock. If travelling, I use the fork lock and a cable lock. If there are two of us we cable the bikes together and then run another cable to something solid.

Tweety and I do not lock our bikes up at home for the simple reason that we have dogs and guns . And no reluctance to use either .
I rarely lock my bike when I am out and if and when I do , I simply use a disc lock and so does Tweety .

We are lucky to live in Nashville, TN (supposedly, the safest place to have a bike in the US) so we never fully lock it.
When I get off it, I will "fork lock" it. We've never gone anywhere on the bike where we can't see it from the restaurant or coffee shop.
When we went to DC, we locked our helmets to the wheels with a chain lock whenever we went inside.

i mean to secure it with a chain, fork lock, u lock, brake disc lock, tie a 95lb hungry doberman to it, anything to secure the bike or protct it from being stolen.
