Hey, folks. Thanks for the insights the last week or so as I have been bike shopping. I have scoured this forum for so many details...

I finally have a bike, after having been outbid or underwhelmed at several bikes that I looked at. I picked up an '81 Honda CX500 in really good shape (as far as this newbie could determine). Bought it off a nice fellow who had it for a year as his starter bike, who knew the original owner and told me a lot of details on it.

Although I am of course stoked, I haven't actually ridden it yet (beyond pushing it in and out of the garage in neutral). I am making myself take the time to really understand the info from the owner's manual (original was included), and especially to feel confident about the pre-ride checklist. I expect I will actually ride it around the parking lot for several hours this weekend, as a real gentle lead-in to the MSF class I am taking in two weeks.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts on the bike, and what to expect. I noticed that the "Legendary" jmillheiser has also started on an early '80s CX500, and have been encouraged by his comments...

Pics via the link below. I am web savvy and have written simple web pages, but I cannot get my photos to show in this post despite an hour of effort.

Thanks again, and I look forward to sharing and receiving thoughts in the months and years to come...

Good solid bike. Very easy to work on. I replaced one of the heads on my '78 and it was a piece of cake. My buddy has an '82 model (GL500i) that runs really strong.
