keep looking, you dont want to deal with a dealer like that.

We only have one local dealer that wont stock smaller bikes. Our local yamaha dealer wont get in any virago 250s but they sell a lot of v-star 650s, they will happily recommend an R6 or FZ6 to a new rider.

The local honda/harley dealer will recommend a rebel or buell blast

The local kawasaki dealer will happily sell ninja 250s and 500s and always keeps a few in stock, they cant sell ninja 650s fast enough.

The local suzuki dealer always has a GS500 and an SV650 or two around and sells a lot of SVs

heres hw it went down: ...
LOL, yeah, that matches my experience.... except I was given the, "What are you afraid of that you don't want a 650?"

Actually, I had a first the other day... salesperson voluntarily showing something smaller than a 650! I went into a dealership the other day to eyeball a bike and the salesguy went almost hard-sell on a 400. The Suzuki DRZ400SM "supermotard".... of course, it costs more than a SV650....

Had a salesman talk me out of a Ninja 250. Glad he did.

so he went and got a 500 as his first bike instead.

in hindsight im glad I didn't get a 250 as my first bike, my 500 is very easy to ride and will do 80mph on the interstate all day, and still has enough oomph to make back road passing a stress free affair

Actually, the 250 incident happened after I scrapped my CX500 (chipped cam follower). I had $4000.00 cash and went bike shopping. I figured a brand new 250 would be the way to go, what with lighter materials and more efficient engines than they had in 1978. The saleman, not knowing I had experience, said I would be bored out of my mind within a week with the Ninja 250 I was sitting on. So, I took his advice and paid $1900.00 cash for the '84 Honda NightHawk 700SC I had previous to my current bike and, as I said, I'm glad I did.

What city do you live in? Where are these numbskull dealers you keep talking with?

the nighthawk SC wouldn't make a bad beginner bike. Just as easy to ride as the CX500 just a tad more power at high RPM.

IIRC the CX500 and nighthawk SC are pretty close in weight, iirc the 650SC is lighter than the CX and the 700SC is about even with the CX.
