im so pathetic... (maintenance related)

#1 Unread post by VermilionX »

can't even clean my chains.

i emailed my mechanic if he can do it this saturday.

i didn't notice until a few days ago that it had to be done every 600 miles, i have above 1,900 miles now and last chain clean was during the break-in maintenance.

i would have done it on my own but i don't have stands and i dunno if can put the bike on the stand on my own.

somebody donated their old swingarm spools to me but it's too small, i don't think i'll be able to use it for the stand.

should i invest on a stand and longer swingarm spools? what other stuff besides chain cleaning will it be useful?

Or you could just... clean a small section then back it up a foot and do the next section.
Of course I'm generalizing from a single example here, but everyone does that. At least I do.

ahh the centerstand... that sure would make things easier but it's added weight so i understand why my bike doesn't have it.

anyway... what other easy stuff can i do if had a stand and swingarm spools?

I'd go out and clean my chain right now if I were you. I'm doing mine on Sunday.

It isn't really that hard, so you can do it, Verm. You just need some rags, newspaper for the ground and something to cover your wheel, so you don't spray it. I used newspaper for that or you can use cardboard. You than have your degreaser to clean it, I used wd-40, and than you oil it up. I wouldn't wait though, since you are well past the scheduled cleaning. It just wears out your chain and sprockets for no reason.

yeah, i've seen it done but i saw it done using a stand.

i'll only be travelling 20 miles for the next 2 days (work is near the house) so it's not so bad if i wait.

if my mechanic can't do it then i'll try jmill and sev's method.
