1982 Yamaha XJ650 Seca for a first bike?

I know, it seems a bit extreme for a first bike, but how does this sounds as a comparison?
Ninja 500r 52.5hp 433lbs 12.95 seconds in the 1/4 mile
Seca XJ650 71.0hp 465lbs 12.83 seconds in the 1/4 mile
The Seca doesnt seem much more radical than the Ninja 500... any thoughts or suggestions? Im just asking this because I know where i can get one for a good price.. (haven't really negotiated the price yet, but it would prolly be decent)..

No problem. Just be wary of old tires (they might look good but be as hard as bowling balls). There will be significantly more weight there than an EX as well. If your physical size fits the bike this should not be a problem. When buying an eighties bike you need to be aware that they don't handle anything like new bikes on modern radial tires. They are fine to ride, but once you get spoiled by the newer stuff, it is hard to go back.

I dont need her to be the queen of the twisties, i just want her to last me a few months.. I hope that i might be able to buy something along the lines of an EX500 or a SV650S.. i'll decide when the time comes.. handling-wise, would there be a huge difference in buying a sportsbike like i just mentioned from the early to mid to late (whatever i can afford) 90's as apposed to brand spanking new?

There is a pretty big gap between the EX500 and SV650 alone. As for a new SV vs. an old SV there is not much of a difference. The EX500 was last changed in '93 so there won't be a lot of difference in any year EX after that. Hope this helps.

Seca is a great bike. Just make sure you have good Tires, and Make sure your Carbs are Cleaned professionally or it will give you headaches.
Also ... SS brake lines do wonders for these bikes!
