Converting from dirt to road...

Hey,
I have a Yamaha TTR-250, which I've had for about two years, and I've ridden before that, so I have a considerable amount of experience on the dirt and some of the logging roads up here in Oregon (about 45 mph) The logging roads are the closest I've ever come to actual road riding, but were a blast to me...I'm now seriously considering a road bike.
I would ideally like something sporty and quick, which would be used just for pleasure rides or quick commutes to and from school or work, all of which can be made on backroads.
Problem is, I don't know where to start looking. I know I'm capable of handling something more powerful than the Kawasaki 250 that everyone seems to point to for beginners- but at the same time I want to keep insurance costs to a minimum. I'm about 6'3" and 180lbs.
I'm planning on taking a safety course, in fact Oregon requires one to get your motorcycle permit.
Any suggestions about the dirt to road switch, the suggested bike, and road riding tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys.
