Hey,
I have a Yamaha TTR-250, which I've had for about two years, and I've ridden before that, so I have a considerable amount of experience on the dirt and some of the logging roads up here in Oregon (about 45 mph) The logging roads are the closest I've ever come to actual road riding, but were a blast to me...I'm now seriously considering a road bike.
I would ideally like something sporty and quick, which would be used just for pleasure rides or quick commutes to and from school or work, all of which can be made on backroads.
Problem is, I don't know where to start looking. I know I'm capable of handling something more powerful than the Kawasaki 250 that everyone seems to point to for beginners- but at the same time I want to keep insurance costs to a minimum. I'm about 6'3" and 180lbs.
I'm planning on taking a safety course, in fact Oregon requires one to get your motorcycle permit.
Any suggestions about the dirt to road switch, the suggested bike, and road riding tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys.
Converting from dirt to road...

I made the same transition. I think you'll find it's really about the weight. One of the bikes i rode during the transition was a kz900. I hated that bike on everything except the highway. It was heavy and cumbersome. When I got the RD-400 it was a little over 300lbs and I loved it (to this day it is still my favorite motorcycle). In the dirt you use alot of body english (i did anyway) and i found that it enhanced my skill on the street. But again less weight more manuverability. Have you considered looking at duel-purpose bikes? they are a bit tall for me, but may give you what your looking for. I ride a Honda Rebel now. It is a bit under powered, but i go everywhere on it (interstate included). Good luck in your decision. Finding the right bike is sometimes difficult, but is the most fun when you finially get what your looking for.

Nah, I'm wanting to make a real conversion. It'll take a lot of convincing for my mom though, ill have to pay for most everything myself, unless I can convince my dad to help a little. I have a well paying job, but that doesnt mean I can spend an absolute fortune (no R1 for me
)
I'm 17, btw
They helped me alot with reeally nice car (2005 Mustang V6) (I love my car, but I've always had an attraction to motorcycles) , so I doubt they'll help much, but I kind of want to get into this myself anyway. Insurance is what worries me most. I can afford to finance or pay cash for a cheap bike, Ill just have to do a lot of research beforehand, which is why any help you guys have would be very awesome.
