Pre Sale Bike Maintance Concerns

I'm looking to buy a used bike for the first time and I get a reply like this from the seller. He does not know much about bike care (the first owner did) but has only had the bike for about one year and put 160miles on it. Besides the potential for rusted out gas tank which will be harder to see since he filled it up. What else should I be concierend about and what should I check before the bike is worth buying. It is a 1997 Kawasaki ZL600 (Eliminator) for a good price and the response I got was this
"The last time I rode it before winter, I ran it dry and had to get home on the reserve. I pulled the battery and it sat dry through the winter. When the weather cleared up, I added fresh gas, connected the battery (which is new) and it fired right up."
Other then this statement, which is not good, as far as I can tell the bike is in great shape.
