99 R1 Transmission Problems HELP please

i have a 99 R1. The other day i was getting on from a stop all the way through third gear, i somehow missed third gear or it was hard to get into but finally i got it in and didn't think anything about it. A couple of miles down the road i came to a stop sign and noticed the bike wouldn't go in first. Now when i ride around the bike upshifts normally with no problem but to down shift to any gear above first i have to push down on the shift pedal twice. When trying to go to first i push down from second and the pedal gets stuck in neutral. In order to get it in first i have to push down to neutral, lift the pedal up slightly then push it back down. Does anybody have any idea what is causing this?

BEST CASE IS THE SHIFT RETURN SPRING IS BROKEN. PULL OF SHIFTER COVER (FOLLOW THE SHIFT ROD UP) AND CHECK RETURN SPRING. I'VE SEEN MANY OF THESE BREAK.
WORST CASE IS SERIOUS TRANNY ISSUES...DRUM, FORKS, ETC. WHICH WILL REQUIRE TEARDOWN.
DO YOU HAVE ANY FREEPLAY AT CLUTCH LEVER?
