Does anyone agree that an average sports bike rider could aspire to be as talented as him with constant practice, trial and error, and motivation?

OR, do any of you think Rossi's talent consists of natural, instinctive ability? More of a natural talent instead of an acquired skill that he's learned in his years.

I know this may have nothing to do with motorcycling, but I used to do a lot of steep rock climbing. There are harder grades of climbing, and there are a few popular individuals who are amazing climbers and have ascended some of the hardest and steepest pieces of rock in history. A lot of people think they have raw, natural talent that a person must be born with and something that a regular person could never accomplish at that level of expertise.

Does anyone think the same about Rossi's skill? That he must have been born with the natural skills, or could anyone with enough motivation get close to his level of skill and talent riding a sports bike?

Good question matthew5656.My view is there has to be certain degree of natural talent in any sports.But there is some luck involved you could be a great rider or driver but you dont have the money to go racing when your younger so as such you miss out.

matthew5656... I think some of it is talent, if you practice enough you can be very very good... but getting as good as him... it's hard to believe that you don't need any natural talent to start.

Anyone who is racing at the professional level has to have some natural talent above and beyond the average rider. Rossi has a whole lot of that talent.

I think the average sportbike rider with a LOT of practice and training could become a good amatuer level racer and at least regionally competitive, most nationally competitve amatuer racers can give pros a run for their money.

A while back I heard a quote that went something like this

Valentino Rossi is inconvtrovertably the best rider of the modern era, however the question is, is he the best rider ever?

I always classify riders in two types. There's the talent, the god given natural talent, that's Freddy Spencer Kevin Shwantz who just dances the thing through the corner.

Then there's the shere bloody minded how to do this, I will win and I will figure out how to win. And I think maybe Wayne Raine fits into that class and Kenny Roberts, EddyLawson, Wayne Gerver the Australian chapion, he was a thouroughly single minded individual when it came to racing, he would force the bike to do his will.

Rossi combines the two, he has the analysis, the calculating machine of a Lawson, the talent of a Schwantz, and the personality of Barry Shoe... I don't think you can produce those on a conveyer belt, they are born, and only once a generation .

He's a motojournalist/Race Commentator. This was from one of those little pre MotoGP hype movies.

I remember seeing Rossi break through in 125cc class.

He not only has talent and confidence (ocasionally too much) in his abilities but those talents and abilities have been honed since childhood. I think he was racing mnimoto's competitively at 12 or 13

If someone were to train to be a new Rossi they would have to start with a bucket load of talent or start real, real young...

That's got to be a recent vid. 2004 or 2005 - that could be Gibernau tapping Rossi on the arm as he passed to give Rossi the finger...
