Boot question

Everyone says you need over the ankle boots but what is the primary job of a boot in a crash? Does it keep you from twisting your ankles? Bending your foot backwards and breaking? Abrasion resistance? I see race boots that have armor on them but for (relatively) low speed street crashes does the hard armor help a lot? I would imagine that short of sliding into an object your feet aren't the first part to smack, that is where you upper body comes into play.

i have no "real" knowledge, but i think a little bit to keep it from th ankles twisting, and a little bit from the abrasion resistance. i persoanlly have SWAT brand leather boots with air-cushion soles, maybe not the best for crashes but i hope to be doing more riding than crashing and they are a hell-of-a-lot better than flip flops.

imagine a 300+lb bike falling on your ankle, it would smash it, at least break it and if your not lucky could shatter it. A good boot will prevent that in most cases. It will keep you from breaking and shattering, from twisting it and if you fall and slide wont wear away like say a sneaker will to expose your bare foot to the street.

My concern is the crushing. I wear a pair of boots that are too scuffed to wear on duty but they have 1100 denier nylon sides which is probably good for abrasion and go well above my ankle but I imagine they offer basically no crush protection. Is there a good pair of 'armored' boots that you could walk around in comfortably?

i've had two dumps so far on my ex500..


and thank god i had my boots on both times.


without them, i would be missing a couple of toes right now....have a good hard "O Ring" pair of boots....

before you buy boots, take em for a little test drive...

1. put the on and tie them.

2. find a wall.

3. kick it as hard as you can.

if you're feet hurt after the kick, go find yourself another air.

P.S. i have iicon metal boots, they're great.

I just wear steel toed work boots that cover the ankle. I never seen armored boots. Unless you count ski boots.

those are some nice boots, but i dont know about impact protection, if they arnt solid or armored i dont know how well they would protect. . . as for comfy armor boots, fat chance. What i did was i had a locking saddle bag on my bike that id keep some sneakers in and just put my boots in there when i got to where i was going and just use the tennies to walk around in.
